Is my piece worth reupholstering?
That depends completely on your priorities! If you have a piece that is a family heirloom, that’s sentimental, is a classic design, or is the perfect style and scale for you, then it probably is! I can restore it to perfection and make changes exactly to your specifications. If you’re looking to save money and pay less than buying something brand new from a large furniture company, custom reupholstery is likely not the best option.
Why is custom upholstery so expensive?
In previous eras, most furniture sold in stores was made with high quality materials by skilled craftspeople. Furniture was considered to be an investment, and customers kept furniture for decades and paid independent skilled craftspeople (like me) to reupholster their high quality furniture. In those days, cost for reupholstery was relatively low compared to the cost of new furniture.
Sadly, today most upholstered furniture sold in stores is mass-produced with cheap materials. It’s made by untrained workers, who typically only know one step of the process, in factories overseas. This makes low quality furniture that lasts only a few years instead of decades, but it’s generally cheaper (unless you buy from high end brands who STILL make the furniture cheaply, but make it attractive and stylish on the outside).
Custom, bespoke furniture made by a skilled artisan is the highest quality, longest lasting furniture you can buy. It is a completely different product than what can be bought in most stores, thus the expense or, if you see it as I do, investment in better, long-term furniture.
